2017 | Calligraphy + Color
In 2016, my interest turned to abstract painting. When I look at the shapes, colors, and textures in my paintings, I perceive they can be transformed into abstract elements. I want to explore the possibilities and grow my imagination and visual sensibility, bringing them together into my paintings to create something more intuitive.
I find beauty in imperfect shapes and incomplete things. Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, I love working with freeform lines or shapes in my abstract paintings. Unless I have a specific theme in my mind, I begin with some calligraphic lines without a preconceived idea or result. If I like a certain theme or color combination, I work in a pair or series to see which permutations or combinations bring a more pleasing result. In the process of interplaying lines and shapes spontaneously, an idea emerges, and the painting reveals something new to which my intuition and emotion respond. This spontaneous decision process often leads to fascinating and unconventional results.

2016 | Into the Woods
Growing up in South Korea, I enjoyed hiking and exploring its great wooded and mountain areas. This exhibition brings together wooded landscape paintings I have created in recent years. Some are Texas landscapes while others are created from my imagination, but the trees and forests evoke fond memories of my childhood and feelings of calm and solitude. My intention is to capture the beauty of the woods by layering watercolors on rice paper. Watercolor paintings created on rice paper provide a unique rendering of the beauty and textures of the woods, and they reflect my love for the colors of wooded nature.
